Have you ever heard of Sjogren's syndrome?

This is a common immune system disorder.  It is more often found in women over the age of 40.  Many times people that experience Sjogren's Syndrome, may also have other immune system disorders such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis.  Sjogrens Syndrome is noted to have symptoms such as dry eyes and dry mouth most of the patients.  People may complain about their eyes burning , itching , or feeling gritty.  Others may have difficulty swallowing.  Some people may experience vaginal dryness, swollen salivary glands, or feeling tired in addition to having joint pain and stiffness.  Though women are more likely to have Sjogrens Syndrome, it can also be found in men.   This disorder affects the mucous membranes and results in a decrease in the production of tears and saliva.  Researchers really don't know what causes some people to develop Sjogrens syndrome, while others do not.  It is suspected that the syndrome may be triggered by a particular virus or bacteria.  People are more at risk whom are over the age of 40, are women, and have rheumatoid arthritis or lupus.  Complications that go along with this syndrome include: dental cavities, yeast infections, blurred vision, light sensitivity, corneal ulcers, and problems with bronchitis or pneumonia.  Some people may possibly develop hepatitis or cirrhosis of the liver.  A small percentage of patients develop cancer of the lymph nodes or lymphoma.  If you are having any of the above symptoms, please make an appointment to see your medical provider.  There are many tests available that your provider may order to determine whether or not you have Sjogrens.  There are tests that can measure the dryness of your eyes or the condition of your salivary glands.  Your doctor may also order a biopsy of your salivary glands and a chest x-ray to identify inflammation in your lungs.  Treatments may include artificial tears, use of humidifiers, nasal sprays, increasing fluid intake, adding lemon juice to water helps the mouth to stay moist for longer periods of time .  Finally, there is also a minor surgical procedure available that can seal your tear ducts to prevent dry eyes.  Other medications such as Evoxac, Salagen or Numoisyn can also be ordered by your physician to control your symptoms of dry mouth or Restasis for your dry eyes. However, remember that over-the-counter cold medications should be avoided because they can worsen your symptoms.  For more information please contact the Sjogrens Syndrome Foundation, Inc. at www.sjogrens.org.  Information on research and clinical trials for Sjogren's can also be found through this webpage.
